Our "Faux Rye" Sunflower Dark Sourdough Bread

My cultural heritage features rye bread.

I have a dirty secret, though.

I have always hated rye bread. Yech.

There was absolutely NO grief on my part when going gluten-free in giving up rye bread. What was not to hate??? The caraway seeds were the worst part, in my opinion.

However, my husband and the Lovely Assistant both love a good rye bread.

So….as a concession to them, I learned how to make what in our house is called “Faux Rye.” Online, it is labelled Sunflower Dark Sourdough with Caraway. They like it!

The real endorsement for me came recently from my visiting, allergy-free father.

Mr. Any-Meat-And-Cheese-On-Rye-Sandwich Man himself.

Our GF/DF household just will not tolerate an authentic rye indoors, so I made my “Faux Rye” for the weekend.

My jaw dropped when I found out that he was squirrelling my “Faux Rye” in his car to eat for later. I tried to explain that this was GF, and, by definition, a rye imitation.

He coldly informed me to stop bothering him with the comments about how GF my bread was. He liked the bread, and he did not want me to: “ruin it by hearing how it was gluten-free. I just like the bread.”

Okay, no problem. Enjoy your sandwich, Dad!

If you are among the few, the proud, the rye bread lovers, please give our “Faux Rye” Sourdough GF bread a try for a taste of the Old Country! It comes up every so often on the bread rotation.

Have an amazing day!
